In the current economic situation, with the significant increase in the research and analysis of nanotechnology in all walks of life, the demand for small-scale clean laboratories is showing a significant growth momentum. Whether it is composite materials for automobiles and packaging materials, in coatings, optical, biological and chemical detection systems, in antibacterial agents, or in applications such as cancer treatment, drug delivery, imaging technology, diagnosis and monitoring, they are all A large number of new clean rooms are required, which has not been encountered in the past.

In many cases, some clean laboratories are reconstructed on the basis of existing spaces . For small-scale clean rooms , how can the existing spaces be transformed and upgraded within a limited budget to meet process requirements? Wiskind found that many companies and research institutions are considering renting factories as a new type of controlled laboratory. Some companies even plan to transform rented factories that were not originally used as laboratories into clean laboratories. For some companies and research institutes, there are many similar problems in remodeling and upgrading existing factories or renewing leased factories. This article will discuss some of the problems.

A few weeks ago, a customer came to our company and asked us to design a brand new clean laboratory for his business. As an investor in the laboratory, he said, "We have found an excellent building and plan to rent it." From the perspective of leasing, the so-called best building is nothing more than location and appearance, but when designing a clean experiment, the key issues to be considered are far more than creating a clean environment.

People often think of the clean room as buying a pre-built standardized box, then install the box in the existing factory, and then power on the lighting system and fans, and the factory can operate. However, these things only meet the minimum requirements of a clean room, and this view is not suitable for most clean room factories.

When evaluating a space that may become a laboratory, the first thing to consider is how to make the existing building achieve the expected function according to the corresponding procedures and make it meet the requirements of the laboratory. In short, we must first clarify the procedures that the laboratory needs to follow. Each set of procedures has its own issues that require attention.

1. Process equipment

Required environmental conditions (cleanliness level, temperature, humidity).

Total area (operation area plus maintenance access).

Height and width (clearance of the entrance channel, and clearance of the installation of the elevator).

Weight (load that the existing building structure can carry).

2. External supply related to the process

The quality of water supplied to the building.

Laboratory waste discharge.

High purity water ( RODI , WFI , distilled water).

Vacuum, CDA.

Gas and chemical substances (hazardous and high purity).

Process waste gas.

Power supply (available voltage, reliability and quality).

3. Security measures

Hazardous materials (transportation, loading and unloading, storage, collection / processing of waste).

Separation of human flow and chemical / air flow.

The accessibility of the site and the building.

The safety requirements or regulations of various countries on hazardous materials.

4. Total space requirements

Space that can be modified or rented.

Laboratory space.

Reserve space of the laboratory (equipment room, chemical and gas storage room).

Reserve space of the clean room (dressing room, equipment room).

The mechanical space of the clean room (room for circulating air unit [RAU] , chiller, humidifier, water supply, etc.).

The electrical space of the clean room (electric room, server room, IT cabinet, emergency generator).

Available roof space.

5. Budget and progress

Construction access restrictions.

Intervene in ongoing activities.

The feasibility of construction deadline.

Design requirements

Before embarking on a design, preferably a plan, the first step is to investigate the existing facilities to determine whether the existing drawings truly reflect the actual status quo. In buildings, the existing system may become an obstacle to the design. This problem often occurs in the HVAC main pipe, water supply , drainage pipe or other infrastructure . The existing roof conditions should be able to place exhaust and Mechanical equipment requirements.

Preparation before construction

While investigating the existing conditions, it is also necessary to investigate whether the market conditions are consistent with the existing factory conditions, and whether they meet the requirements of project schedule and performance. When selecting materials, the main consideration is whether the availability can meet the schedule requirements.

The entry and exit of materials, equipment and workers must be arranged when the pre-construction plan is drawn up to ensure that the supplier’s personnel can enter the construction area in time and will not waste time on the construction site due to access issues. The most ideal solution to the access problem is probably to set up a temporary passage and changing room. In the planning process, separating the construction entrance seems to be a luxury, but the effect of this move in the construction process is enough to offset its expenditure.

When shipping and storing materials and components, there are clean and non-clean points, so it must be included in the overall planning of the transformation plan and schedule. The correct material handling measures can greatly reduce labor costs and reduce pollution. Continuously moving and transferring materials, there is a risk of damage to the materials, which will ultimately affect the progress of the renovation project. A sound plan coupled with effective construction management can ensure that materials are delivered on time, and it also simplifies the segmentation of materials during the installation process. To do this, it is necessary to reduce the space required for material transportation and increase its flexibility.

Because during the entire construction period, it is necessary to ensure that the construction area is separated from the surrounding space, so planning should be done in the design stage. Issues that need to be considered include the space above the ceiling, the piping system, the static pressure space, the return air sandwich wall, the liquid conveying pipe, and the space under the floor, to minimize pollution caused by demolition and / or renovation construction, and to curb pollution.

Construction material issues

1. The cleanroom requires that the material does not produce dust, the structure does not accumulate dust, and the seal is tight and impervious to dust, so the decorative materials of the cleanroom will directly affect the cleanroom level. The cleanroom material meets the requirements of heat preservation, heat insulation, fire prevention and moisture resistance; the surface is smooth and smooth, without cracks, tight interface, no falling off of particles, resistant to cleaning and disinfection.

2. When the paint layer is used for the cleanroom wall panels and cleanroom ceiling panel, the materials that are corrosion-resistant, clean-resistant, smooth and mildew-resistant are used.

3. Reliable sealing measures shall be taken for the structure and construction gaps of cleanroom doors, windows, walls, ceilings, and floor (floor) surfaces.

Different cleanrooms also need to consider different personal needs when choosing interior decoration materials?

1. Cleanroom usually need to be wiped frequently. In addition to wiping with water, wipe with disinfectant, alcohol, other solvents, etc. These liquids usually have a certain chemical nature, which will cause some materials to discolor and fall off. The surface of the cleanroom panel has certain chemical resistance.

2. Biological cleanrooms such as operating rooms are usually equipped with trioxygen O3 generators for the purpose of sterilization. O3 (i.e. ozone) is a strong oxidizing gas, which will accelerate the oxidative corrosion of objects, especially metals in the environment, and will also cause the general coating surface to fade and change color due to oxidation. Therefore, such a cleanroom requires that its decorative materials have good oxidation resistance and will not produce rust.

Endure® is mainly suitable for clean room enclosures under the environment of VHP (Vaporize Hydrogen Peroxide) disinfection,Its unique properties include Excellent weatherability, excellent mechanical properties, ductility, and resistance to a wide range of chemicals, solvents and colorants.
